Vakaros Q&A

As understood by Fleet Secretary Summer Greene (909) | February 5, 2025

What is the Vakaros System?

In simple terms, Vakaros devices are advanced electronics with built-in GPS that can replace traditional compass/timer setups. They can provide detailed data, including:

  • Position
  • Velocity
  • Heading
  • Heel and pitch angles
  • Distance-to-line and time-to-line
  • Time-to-burn
  • Data logging

One standout feature is the electronic start line calling, also known as RaceSense. This system allows units to communicate with each other, so race committee units can provide information directly to your boat, including:

  • Marking the start line
  • Automatically starting your timer
  • Indicating if you are over the starting line (OCS)

Is it Class Legal?

Sort of. Historically, the Etchells class only permitted magnetic compasses and timers. However, the International Governing Committee (IGC), with approval from World Sailing, has passed a resolution allowing the use of Vakaros for a six-month trial period. This trial will help determine whether the system should be adopted class-wide and which features would be permissible long-term. Read the resolution here.

Where Has It Been Used?

The full Vakaros system was successfully deployed at the 2025 Worlds and is currently being used during Miami’s Biscayne Bay Series, where feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. There’s strong speculation that the class will vote this fall to permanently allow the system.

When Will Fleet 13 Start Using It?

RaceSense will debut in Fleet 13 during the North American Championship (May 15-18). All competitors at this event must carry a Vakaros system. Participants can either buy or rent a unit directly from Vakaros.

How Much Does It Cost?

To purchase the system:

  • Vakaros Atlas 2: $1,200
  • Subscription fee: $150/year or $50/month
  • Etchells-specific bracket: $140 (or ask how we modified TackTick brackets we’ll share instructions)

Short term you can rent the system for the North American Championship only:

  • Vakaros Atlas 2: $105
  • Subscription Fee: $50

What If Atlas 2 Is Out of Stock? Should I Buy an Edge Instead?

I would recommended waiting for the Atlas 2. The Edge model lacks several features, and it would be disappointing if the class adopts features that the Edge doesn’t support. Vakaros has assured that all North American Championship participants will have access to a unit, so even if your order is delayed, a rental option will be available.

What Is the Plan for Using RaceSense Going Forward?

The future schedule is still being finalized. For RaceSense to work, every boat must have a Vakaros unit synced with the race committee’s system. The rollout timeline will depend on how many fleet members choose to buy versus rent a unit for the North American Championship.

Can I Use Advanced Features Before the North Americans?

The current plan is to start with the North American Championship. However, the Vakaros system does offer a class-compliant mode that restricts access to only the compass and timer functions. There is a possibility that the Notice of Race (NoR) for the Orca Bowl may be amended to allow the use of advanced features, depending on timing and adoption rates.

I think the informal April ODW, would be a great time to test advanced features of the units, though electronic starting isn’t planned unless there is widespread adoption.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of the Vakaros system represents an exciting step forward for racing technology. As Fleet 13 navigates its adoption, staying informed and involved will ensure smooth integration and continued competitive success.
